The 900SS took over the reins in driving Ducati's reputation. Coming off the 750SS, a bike that in the pre SJM era defined the top of production motorcycling, Ducati took a styling misstep with the 860GT. Although more "modern", and sporting a larger engine. the 860GT found little favour, and buyers expressed their desire for a more classic look. The 900SS was a bike for people who, even in the classic era, didn't think some bikes of the day were classic enough.
When the 900SS (which restored desmodromic valve train to the same-capacity engine of the 860GT) arrived, it had been heralded by Mike Hailwood's emergence from retirement, where he trashed the all-japanese competition on an early non-works 900SS. Our plans are to acquire a genuine 900SS as part of our second year acquisitions. For the first year, we've begun the conversion process for our 860GT to 900SS spec (no desmo, sorry). This is a common conversion, and a great preparation for when we the real thing comes along. And, you get pretty close to the original experience, for far fewer points.
